Press Reports

Walsall U-15 2 Stoke-on-Trent U-15 2 - 3.04.02
Stoke started strongly in this under-15 Staffordshire Leckie Shield game and Walsall keeper Brighon Parsons (Willenhall) blocked a good effort early on. The Stoke pressure saw them take the lead with a shot from the edge of the box. Parsons stopped the visitors going two up when he turned another shot round the post. Khalid Grey (Alumwell) headed a Dean Clarke (Pool Hayes) cross inches over but a minute later he grabbed the Walsall equaliser following good work from Dean Clarke and Drew Roper (Aldridge). Danny Clarke (Joseph Leckie) beat the keeper to a through ball to give Walsall the lead after the break. Stoke then hit the post before grabbing an equaliser. Parsons denied Stoke victory with a tremendous double save near the end.

Wolverhampton U-15 3 Walsall U-15 2 - 27.03.02
With both sides having nothing to play for in this West Midlands game at Bilston Town F.C. Walsall virtually fielded two different teams in each half of the game. Despite this Walsall gave a good account of themselves missing out by the odd goal in five. Walsall's scorers were Danny Clarke (Joseph Leckie) and Stephen Brown (Shelfield) from a free kick.

Walsall U-15 0 Stoke-on-Trent U-15 0 - 23.03.02
This West Midlands under-15 game was a hard fought contest between two evenly matched sides with both defences dominating. Walsall’s Michael Clare (Aldridge) came closest to scoring when the Stoke keeper tipped his free kick onto the post. Khalid Grey (Alumwell) provided the drive and inspiration for Walsall from midfield but the Stoke defence stood firm against the Walsall forwards. Walsall needed to win to have an unlikely mathematical chance of finishing in a semi-final spot from the league section.

Tamworth U-15 1 Walsall U-15 4 -16.03.02
Tamworth under-15s shocked Walsall by taking the lead in this Staffordshire game but goals from Daniel Clarke (Joseph Leckie), Ian Stephenson (Arthur Terry), Michael Clare (Aldridge) and Alex Perkins (Arthur Terry) wrapped things up for Walsall. Despite the score line this was not one of Walsall’s best performances against a side playing with only ten men.

Walsall U-15 5 Newcastle-under-Lyme U-15 3 - 9.03.02
Walsall under-15s were made to fight all the way against ten-man Newcastle in this Staffordshire Leckie Shield game. Khalid Grey (Alumwell) gave Walsall a perfect start with an early volley but Newcastle forced home an equaliser. Matthew Leeson (Aldridge) restored Walsall’s advantage but the visitors hit back again with two goals. Scott Pearson (Shelfield) came on to score Walsall’s third before two goals from Ian Stephenson (Arthur Terry) wrapped things up for Walsall.

Walsall U-15 1 Cannock U-15 3 - 2.03.02
Walsall under-15s crashed to defeat despite having more chances than Cannock. Cannock had a two-goal lead by half time thanks to an own goal and a Tom Barnett strike five minutes before the break. Walsall then produced their best spell before the whistle with Wesley Grey (Alumwell) seeing a shot turned round. From the corner Michael Clare (Aldridge) headed just over. Matthew Leeson (Aldridge) set up Ian Stephenson (Arthur Terry) whose shot went inches wide. Cannock increased their lead midway through the second half through a Michael Caine header before Leeson set Stephenson up for Walsall’s goal.

Stafford U-15 0 Walsall U-15 3 - 23.02.02
Walsall under-15s kept their West Midlands semi-final hopes alive with this emphatic victory at Stafford. Alex Fox (Streetly) was the hero with a hat trick. Difficult conditions at the start meant the first shot on target came on 20 minutes when Walsall keeper Sean Whorgan (Shire Oak) turned a shot round the post and then made another good save from the resulting corner. Matthew Leeson (Aldridge) then went close for Walsall before he linked with Ian Stephenson (Arthur Terry) whose shot was blocked but Fox was on hand to score the opener. A tremendous long ball from the back by Stephen Brown (Shelfield) found Fox for the second goal and he completed his hat trick five minutes later.

Warley U-15 2 Walsall U-15 0 - 19.01.02
The under-15 game saw a reversal of the score line as Warley adapted to the conditions better than Walsall. Walsall were depleted following the withdrawal of several players through illness and injury. This was the first time they had failed to score in a match this season and this rates as one of their poorest performances. Both Warley goals came in the last twenty minutes as Walsall failed to produce any shots on target. In a tight league this leaves Walsall with only an outside mathematical chance of qualifying for the West Midlands semi-final by finishing in second place.

Walsall U-15 3 Worcestershire North U-15 1 - 12.01.02
Walsall under-15s were always on top in this West Midlands encounter but the visitors managed to hold them in the first half. Man of the match Matthew Leeson (Aldridge) finally broke the deadlock after the break to give Walsall a deserved lead. Walsall were soon pegged back when Worcestershire North equalised. The game was in the final ten minutes when Stephen Brown (Shelfield) went off injured. Wesley Grey (Alumwell) replaced him and restored Walsall’s lead with his first touch when a clearance from a Worcestershire North free kick found him. Ian Stephenson (Arthur Terry) scored Walsall’s third with two minutes left.

Walsall U-15 1 Worksop and Retford U-15 2 (ESFA Wizards U-15 Trophy) -  8.12.01
Walsall under-15s will consider themselves unlucky to have lost this Wizards Trophy game despite being two goals down at half time. Worksop and Retford found a way through Walsall’s defence on two occasions and scored. The first was a defence splitting through ball to Haydn Zaccaria who made no mistake. The second was an unstoppable shot into the top corner by Sam West. Michael Tuohy (Pool Hayes) hit the post for Walsall at the end of the half following a succession of corners. Daniel Clarke (Joseph Leckie) came on for the second half and within a minute saw a good shot turned round the post by Dale Parker. Clarke was rewarded ten minutes later when he found the far corner from wide on the right. Stephen Brown (Shelfield) saw a fierce shot headed off the line as Walsall searched in vain for an equaliser.

Halesowen and Stourbridge U-15 2 Walsall U-15 1 - 24.11.01
Walsall under-15s slipped to a shock first defeat of the season at Halesowen and Stourbridge after surrendering the lead in the last two minutes. Khalid Grey (Alumwell) set up Ian Stephenson (Arthur Terry) early in the second half to give Walsall the lead. Although Walsall were well below par they had looked too strong for the home side until they had a free kick that was intercepted by a Halesowen player. A left wing attack ended with the equalising goal with just two minutes left. From the restart Halesowen gained possession and Walsall were made to pay as the home side claimed all the points.

Walsall U-15 1 Wolverhampton U-15 0 (ESFA Wizards U-15 Trophy) - 17.11.01
Walsall under-15s marched into the fourth round of the ESFA Trophy with this hard fought victory over local rivals Wolverhampton. In a scrappy first half the nearest either side came to scoring was a Daniel Clarke (Joseph Leckie) header for Walsall that was safely dealt with by Wolves keeper Simon Breakwell (Northicote) and a shot from Danny Ryder (Northicote) for Wolves. Wolves had the edge in the first half but a transformed Walsall produced several chances early in the second half. Two corners produced two heading chances for Khalid Grey (Alumwell) and Ian Stephenson (Arthur Terry) was just beaten to the ball by Breakwell after a great run. With less than ten minutes left Stephenson had a similar chase for the ball and this time made no mistake as he steered the ball past Breakwell. Stephenson then crossed and Clarke just failed to divert it into the net. A fingertip save then denied Clarke as Walsall continued to put Wolves under pressure.

Walsall U-15 2 Stafford U-15 2 - 10.11.01
The under-15s continued their stop-go start to the season after another long lay-off. A poor first half saw neither side threatening to take control of the game. Stafford then scored a breakaway goal to take a shock second half lead. Things went from bad to worse for Walsall when the visitors increased their lead following a goalmouth scramble. To their credit Walsall fought back and Michael Tuohy (Pool Hayes) reduced the arrears with fifteen minutes left. Alex Fox (Streetly) scored Walsall’s equaliser near the end. Walsall will need to improve on this performance if they are to overcome an in-form Wolverhampton in the Trophy on Saturday.

Burton U-15 1 Walsall U-15 3 - 20.10.01
Walsall under-15s continued their Staffordshire campaign with this good performance at Burton. Ian Stephenson (Arthur Terry) set Walsall on the way with a goal inside the first five minutes. Michael Clare (Aldridge) increased the lead with an excellent finish before half time. Alex Fox (Streetly) should have made the game safe in the second half but minutes later Khalid Grey (Alumwell) found the net to seal the points for Walsall. Burton pulled a goal back two minutes from the end but had rarely troubled a Walsall side that continues to improve.

Birmingham U-15 1 Walsall U-15 4 (ESFA Trophy Round 2) - 13.10.01
Birmingham under-15s took advantage of a long lay off for Walsall by grabbing an early lead in this ESFA Trophy game. Simon Volante (Holy Trinity) found space down the left and finished well to shock Walsall. Walsall took some time to produce a good chance and a goal from Wesley Grey (Alumwell) was ruled out for offside. With the next attack Ian Stephenson (Arthur Terry) crossed for Danny Clarke (Joseph Leckie) to equalise. In the first minute of the second half Walsall took the lead when a Stephen Brown (Shelfield) free kick found the net. Good work by Clarke and Stephenson set up Alex Perkins (Arthur Terry) for Walsall’s third five minutes later. Leon Deeming (Queen Mary’s) headed off the line to prevent a Birmingham comeback before Michael Tuohy (Pool Hayes) wrapped things up in the dying seconds.

Wolverhampton U-15 0 Walsall U-15 5 - 8.09.01
Walsall under-15s had a dream start to the season in this Staffordshire Leckie Shield game against deadly rivals Wolverhampton. Walsall keeper Sean Worgan (Shire Oak) gathered the ball from a Wolves move started from the kick off and his long kick sailed over his opposite number’s head and into the net. Danny Clarke (Joseph Leckie) then completed a tremendous hat trick before half time to leave Wolves floundering. Alex Fox (Streetly) hammered Walsall’s fifth in the second half to complete a fantastic performance for a side facing some important early season games including an under-14 West Midlands final held over from last season.
