Press Reports

Walsall U-14 1 Hereford U-14 2 ( West Midlands Final) - 15.05.04
Walsall under-14s lost a second successive West Midlands final after an unbeaten league section programme. Walsall started as clear favourites and after three minutes the ball broke to Ben Clougher (Streetly) who ran on to slot the ball past the advancing keeper. Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) almost doubled Walsall ’s lead but his effort drifted just wide of the far post. Hereford equalised when Adam Bendall scored from the spot.  Minutes later, Walsall keeper Richard Gethin (Aldridge), making his debut as a late replacement for the injured Duncan Rogers, deflected a fierce Bendall shot round the post. Hereford were then awarded a second penalty in five minutes and Bendall scored again to put the visitors in front. Nicholls was denied by a great block tackle by Hereford keeper Danny Hill as he rushed out of the box. In the second half both keepers produced good saves but Walsall performed well below par and could not complain about the result.

Wolverhampton U-14 3 Walsall U-14 5 - 17.04.04
Walsall under-14s were involved in a Staffordshire league thriller at Wolverhampton. Steven Dougliss (Sneyd) put Walsall ahead with a 25-yard screamer and Ryan Jones (St. Francis) increased the lead. Wolves pulled a goal back before half time. Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) restored Walsall’s two-goal advantage after the break but Wolves fought back to level the scores at 3-3. Walsall refused to buckle and Kelvin Shakes (Pool Hayes) put Walsall back in front with a goal on his debut. With five minutes left Nicholls settled Walsall’s nerves with his second goal to secure a hard-earned victory.

Walsall U-14 3 Mid and South Warwickshire U-14 2 (West Midlands semi-final) - 27.03.04
Walsall under-14s battled their way to a fourth West Midlands final with a depleted squad of 12 players. Their first half performance put the visitors on the back foot from the start and Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) put Walsall in front after ten minutes. Nicholls added a second ten minutes later and Anthony Roman (Sneyd) was unlucky when set up by a good move involving Nicholls and Ryan Jones (St. Francis of Assisi). The visitors pulled a goal back before the break and equalised from the penalty spot early in the second half. Andy Bentley (Shire Oak) and Edward Forsythe (Streetly) made sure there were no more alarms for Walsall at the back and Roman settled the game when he found space behind the defenders to head home.

Brierley Hill and Dudley U-14 1 Walsall U-14 2 - 13.03.04
Walsall under-14s finished their seven match West Midlands league section with this victory against Brierley Hill and Dudley. They have dropped only one point in this competition and now play either Hereford or Mid and South Warwickshire in the semi-final. In an even first half Ben Clougher (Streetly) struck the bar for Walsall and key defender Andy Bentley (Shire Oak) had to come off due to illness. The home side shocked Walsall after the break when they took the lead but Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) soon equalised following a good move with Clougher. Nicholls grabbed the winner and saw another shot blocked on the line. Seth Taylor (Arthur Terry) was the star for Walsall at the back after Bentley went off.

Staffordshire Moorlands U-14 0 Walsall U-14 6 - 6.03.04
Walsall under-14s bounced back after a long lay off to completely outplay Staffordshire Moorlands in this Staffordshire game. First half goals from Ben Clougher (Streetly) and Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) set Walsall on the way. Nicholls added another shortly after the break and Richard Davies (Pool Hayes) made it 4-0. Nicholls completed his hat trick before scoring his fourth from the penalty spot to complete the goal feast. All the Walsall team contributed to an excellent all round team performance.

Walsall U-14 3 Stafford U-14 2 - 10.01.04
Walsall under-14s returned to winning ways in this West Midlands game against Stafford but they made hard work of it. Walsall dominated the attacking play and the first twenty minutes saw Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) providing a succession of good crosses and corner kicks with nothing on the end of them. Ashley Lawrence (St. Thomas More) made the Stafford keeper scramble to keep out a long-range effort before the visitors took the lead against the run of play. Richard Davies (Pool Hayes) equalised before the break with a fine solo effort. Nicholls at last gave Walsall the lead with a run from the half way line that ended with a fine finish. Ben Clougher (Streetly) then squandered another good chance before Stafford equalised. Andy Bentley (Shire Oak) headed home a deserved Walsall winner from a Nicholls corner.

Wolverhampton U-14 2 Walsall U-14 2 - 3.01.04
Wolverhampton under-14s twice came from behind to deny Walsall all three points in this top of the table West Midlands clash. Ricky Nicholls gave Walsall the lead after ten minutes but Wolves hit back with an equaliser. Ben Clougher (Streetly) restored Walsall’s lead before the break with a well-struck shot from the edge of the box. With Seth Taylor (Arthur Terry) and Andy Bentley (Shire Oak) performing well at the back Walsall looked well set for victory. Steven Dougliss (Sneyd) and Gregg Stone (Arthur Terry) were winning the midfield battle for Walsall but eventually Wolves struck back to keep their own semi-final hopes alive.

Walsall U-14 2 Cannock and District U-14 3 - 6.12.03
Walsall under-14s produced probably their worst performance in three years of district football in this Staffordshire league game. The first twenty minutes saw neither keeper troubled until Ben Clougher (Streetly) put Walsall in front after he latched onto a loose ball. Cannock’s Jarred Stevens then scored twice as the Walsall defence fell apart in the last five minutes of the first half. Only a superb performance from Walsall keeper Duncan Rogers (Shire Oak) kept Walsall in the game in the second half. Jason Sutton made the game safe for Cannock midway through the half. Ryan Jones (St. Francis) came on late for his Walsall debut and capped an impressive start with Walsall’s second goal in the dying seconds.

Walsall U-14 4 Stoke-on-Trent U-14 0 - 22.11.03
Walsall under-14s made it four wins from four West Midlands games when they beat Stoke at the weekend. Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) set Walsall on the way when he slotted a Steven Dougliss (Sneyd) through ball past the keeper. Gregg Stone (Arthur Terry) scored a rare goal after the break to make it 2-0 and Ashley Lawrence (St. Thomas More) made the game safe when he scored following a good move. Kieran Moran (St. Thomas More, playing his last game for Walsall before moving to Spain, provided a perfect cross for Nicholls to head home the fourth goal.

Walsall U-14 0 Redditch U-14 1 - 8.11.03
Walsall under-14s suffered a shock first defeat of the season in this Wolves Cup quarterfinal. In a repeat of last season’s Walsall Cup final at Bescot Stadium Redditch gained revenge for their defeat in that game with a late goal. Walsall’s best chance in the first half came when Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) set Steven Dougliss (Pool Hayes) free only for him to de denied by a good save. Keeper Duncan Rogers (Shire Oak) kept Walsall in the game with some good saves as Redditch applied the pressure. Ed Forsythe (Streetly) backed up his keeper with a sound performance at full back. Rogers was unlucky when he sliced an unnecessary back pass to the opposition, the decisive goal being the end result.

Walsall U-14 3 Erdington and Saltley U-14 1 - 18.10.03
Walsall under-14s were still missing key players in this Wolves Cup game but still proved too good for Erdington and Saltley. Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) opened the scoring after ten minutes but the visitors were back on level terms within five minutes. Nicholls set up Ben Clougher (Streetly) to restore Walsall’s lead with a fierce volley before half time. Walsall continued to look the better bet in the second half with Gregg Stone (Arthur Terry) causing the visitors all sorts of problems. Midway through the half Nicholls went on a run and slipped the ball under the keeper for Walsall’s third goal.

Walsall U-14 4 Staffordshire Moorlands U-14 0 - 11.10.03
An injury hit Walsall under-14 side was still too good for Staffordshire Moorlands in this Staffordshire game. With Ashley Lawrence (St. Thomas More) causing the Moorlands defenders problems Walsall always looked dangerous going forward. Ben Clougher (Streetly) set Walsall on the way with a headed goal on ten minutes. He was on the mark again five minutes later when he volleyed in from a corner. The visitors threatened to get back into the game but Seth Taylor (Arthur Terry) was on hand to clear off the line. Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) twice hit the post before the break. In the second half Nicholls hit the bar before eventually finding the net twice in five minutes to wrap the game up for Walsall.

Halesowen and Stourbridge U-14 1 Walsall U-14 3 - 4.10.03
Walsall under-14s made it three wins out of three in this West Midlands game at Halesowen and Stourbridge. Ben Clougher (Streetly) got Walsall off to a perfect start with a goal after two minutes. The home side then put Walsall under some pressure and came close to an equaliser when they hit the bar. Walsall survived and hit back with an Anthony Roman (Sneyd) goal before the break. Walsall took command in the second half and Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) hit the bar and the post before he lobbed the keeper for Walsall’s third. Halesowen and Stourbridge pulled a goal back in the final minutes.

West Bromwich U-14 0 Walsall U-14 5 - 20.09.03
West Bromwich under-14s put Walsall under pressure in the early stages of this West Midlands fixture but once Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) put Walsall in front there was only one team in it. Nicholls added a second before the break after several brilliant saves by the West Bromwich keeper. Ben Clougher (Streetly) was on hand to fire home after a Nicholls shot was parried. Nicholls scored his third midway through the second half. Richard Nicholson (St. Thomas More) fired a Kieran Moran (St. Thomas More) cross against the bar and Nicholls saw another shot palmed onto the bar by the keeper. Moran set up Nicholls for his fourth and Walsall’s fifth near the end.

Walsall U-14 5 Cannock and District U-14 2 - 13.09.03
Walsall under-14s kicked off the new season in impressive fashion in this West Midlands game against Cannock. Good work by man of the match Gregg Stone (Arthur Terry) set up Ricky Nicholls (St. Thomas More) for the opener. Nicholls and Stone combined to lay on the second for Ashley Lawrence (St. Thomas More). Lawrence ran onto a ball from Phil Lutwyche (Barr Beacon) to score again right on halftime. Nicholls completed his brace after the break. Striker turned keeper, Ben Clougher (Streetly), made a superb save to keep Cannock out but was well beaten a minute later. Richard Davies (Pool Hayes) headed Walsall’s fifth from a Nicholls corner. Cannock grabbed a second goal in the last minute.
