Press Reports

Walsall U-13 1 Cannock and District U-13 1 - 25.03.06
Walsall under-13s were caught on the hop with an early Cannock goal in this Staffordshire league game but more than held their own against a team that has reached a West Midlands semi-final. Stephen Yates (Aldridge) came closest to an equaliser before half-time with a well-taken free kick. Walsall finally grabbed a deserved second half equaliser when a good cross from James Quarry (St. Thomas More) was turned in by Daniel Lewis (St. Thomas More).

Walsall U-13 1 Stoke-on-Trent U-13 1 (a.e.t. Stoke won 5-4 on penalties) - 18.03.06
Walsall  under-13s lost this Walsall Cup quarter-final replay after a penalty shootout. Having fought out a 4-4 draw in the first game this game was short on goalmouth action in comparison. Stoke took the lead just before the end of an uninspiring first half. James Quarry (St. Thomas More) equalised with a well-taken goal but then missed a penalty after Jamie Stanton (Blue Coat) had been brought down. Daniel Lewis (St. Thomas More) missed a couple of good chances to win the game for Walsall in extra-time before Stoke claimed a semi-final place by winning 5-4 on penalties.

Walsall U-13 3 Nuneaton and District U-13 0 - 28.01.06
Walsall under-13s recorded their first competitive victory of the season in this West Midlands game at Bentley Leisure Pavilion. Walsall had the best chances in the first half but only had a goal from Daniel Aston (Brownhills) to show for all their efforts at half-time. Adam Wynn (Aldridge) increased Walsall ’s lead when his shot was deflected into the net. Luke Bottomer (Aldridge) set up Alex Hale (Brownhills) for Walsall ’s third near the end.

Walsall U-13 0 Kings Norton and South Birmingham U-13 1 - 21.01.06
Walsall under-13s should have wrapped this West Midlands game up in the first quarter. Daniel Aston (Brownhills) saw a first minute effort sail over the bar and minutes later he missed another good chance. Aston was then denied by a good save from the keeper. With Stephen Yates (Aldridge) brilliantly marshalling the Walsall defence, keeper Adam Dennant (Aldridge) was untroubled until the visitors found a way through early in the second half. Walsall battled away looking for an equaliser but they were left regretting those early missed chances.

Coventry U-13 1 Walsall U-13 0
After last week's one-sided game Walsall under-13s were involved in a much more even game at Coventry and were unlucky to lose to a single goal. Stephen Yates (Aldridge) had another good game. Walsall's cause was not helped by an injury to James Quarry (St. Thomas More) that is likely to keep him out of the side for some time.

Brierley Hill and Dudley U-13 6 Walsall U-13 1 - 07.01.06
This friendly game showed the gulf that exists between those associations still able to draw upon some academy players and those like Walsall that are unable to use any boys at the local academies. Walsall had no answer to the power of Brierley Hill and Dudley as they rattled in six goals before Stephen Yates (Aldridge) replied for Walsall in the last minute. Schools' District football no longer has a level playing field in respect of players' availability.

Stoke-on-Trent U-13 4 Walsall U-13 4 - 10.12.05
Walsall under-13s face another replay in the Walsall Cup after a thrilling game at Stoke. Walsall got off to a terrible start when Stoke were awarded a penalty inside the first minute. Jamie Stanton (Blue Coat) grabbed an equaliser just before the break. James Quarry (St. Thomas More) put Walsall in front and then had a goal disallowed. The Stoke keeper kept his team in the game with a string of saves before a scrambled equaliser forced extra-time. Stoke then shook Walsall by grabbing the lead but Quarry found the net again for a deserved equaliser. Stoke regained the lead before Ashley Southall (Brownhills) forced a deserved replay with the last kick of the game.

Wolverhampton U-13 2 Walsall U-13 3 - 29.11.05
Walsall under-13s dumped Wolverhampton out of the Walsall F.C. Cup with a magnificent performance at the Wolverhampton Casuals ground. Goals from Daniel Aston (Brownhills) and Jamie Stanton (Blue Coat) seemed to have put Walsall in control in the first half before Wolves hit back with two goals in the final ten minutes of the half. A fine save by Walsall keeper Adam Dennant (Aldridge) prevented Wolves from grabbing a half-time lead. A James Quarry (St. Thomas More) goal restored Walsall ’s lead after the break. With Stephen Yates (Aldridge) and Jake Keyworth (St. Thomas More) solid in defence for Walsall the home side was unable to find a way back. Walsall now face a trip to Stoke in the next round.

Stoke-on-Trent U-13 4 Walsall U-13 2 - 12.11.05
Walsall under-13s conceded two poor goals to leave themselves with a mountain to climb in this Staffordshire game. James Quarry (St. Thomas More) was brought down in the box and got up to fire home the penalty kick to give Walsall hope at half-time. Alex Hale (Brownhills) grabbed an equaliser ten minutes into the second half and then both sides had chances to grab the lead. Ben Holden (Willenhall) came on as substitute keeper and made some good saves before Stoke scored a third. The fourth Stoke goal came as Walsall pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

Walsall U-13 2 Wolverhampton U-13 2 - 05.11.05
A late penalty earned Wolverhampton under-13s a replay in this Walsall F.C. cup game. Wolves started strongly and soon grabbed the lead. Walsall were under the cosh for most of the first half and Wolves had chances to sew the game up before ex-Wolves player James Quarry (St. Thomas More) levelled before half-time after he was set up by Daniel Aston (Brownhills). Daniel Lewis (St. Thomas More) put Walsall in front in the second half but Walsall conceded a lot of corners and it was from one of these that the penalty was awarded.

Erdington and Saltley U-13 2 Walsall U-13 1 - 15.10.05
The under-13s produced a much improved performance following their 7-2 defeat in the previous game and were unlucky to not get at least a point. Things looked bleak again for a much changed side when they went 2-0 down in the first ten minutes.
Walsall hit back with a goal from Daniel Lewis (St. Thomas More) and were unlucky to miss out on an equaliser. Liam Pickering and Stephen Yates (Aldridge) and Jamie Stanton (Blue Coat) all played well as did two more new boys from Aldridge School, Adam Winn and Ben Redfern.

Solihull U-13 7 Walsall U-13 2 - 01.10.05
Telford with a seven-goal salvo in a trial game but were on the receiving end themselves in this West Midlands game at Solihull . A physically much bigger side overwhelmed Walsall with five goals in the first half. Two more goals in the opening two minutes of the second half saw the home side heading for a record score. Walsall clawed their way back to some respectability with a goal turned in by a defender and a Jake Lamborne strike.
