Press Reports
Walsall U-11B 3 Swindon U-11B 1
- 10.05.03
The under-11 B team continued their unbeaten run with a
splendid Webster Shield win against title chasing Swindon. After an even first
half, Walsall piled on the pressure after the break. Mark Wooldridge (Abbey),
Luke Cox (Short Heath) and Freddie Sheriden-Mills all went close before Joshua
Pickard (Blackwood) put Walsall in front. Swindon equalised against the run of
play, but good work by Nirankar Dosanjh (Manor) set up Cox for Walsall’s
second. Sam Hughes (St. Anne’s) grabbed the third. Two good saves from Danny
Bedworth (Alumwell) kept Walsall’s lead intact.
Wolverhampton U-11B 1 Walsall U-11B 2
- 22.03.03
In the Webster Shield B team game Josh Pickard (Blackwood)
set up Freddie Sheriden-Mills (County Bridge) to give Walsall the lead. Mills
missed a chance for a second when he missed from the spot. Walsall then missed
further good chances before Alex Weaver (Manor) came to the rescue when he
cleared off the line. A long kick by Walsall keeper Danny Bedworth (Alumwell)
cleared the Wolves defence and Joe Mangan (Manor) was on hand to score the
second goal. Wolves pulled a goal back from Charles Turner (Christ Church) near
the end but Joshua Scott (St. Peter’s) and Luke Cox (Short Heath) always had
things under control for Walsall at the back.
Halesowen and Stourbridge U-11B 1 Walsall U-11B 6 - 22.2.03
In the B team game Walsall again hit six but at least
the goals were shared out. Nirankar Dosanjh (Manor) almost matched Lund’s
performance in the A team game, albeit in a defensive role. Tommy Frankham (St.
Patrick’s) opened the Walsall scoring and Freddie Sheridan-Mills (County
Bridge) grabbed the second after a poor clearance. A Mark Wooldridge run and
shot saw the rebound fall for Frankham to score his second. Wooldridge finally
found the net with a long-range effort before Frankham completed his hat-trick.
Wooldridge completed his brace before the home side grabbed a late goal.
Walsall U-11B 2 Brierley Hill and Dudley U-11B 2
- 8.2.03
The under-11B side could count themselves unlucky to be
trailing by a single goal at half time from virtually the only attack from
Brierley Hill and Dudley in a half dominated by Walsall. Two great saves denied
Mark Wooldridge (Abbey) and Joe Mangan (Manor) went close with a lob. Sam Hughes
(St. Anne’s) grabbed a deserved equaliser after good work by Tommy Frankham
(St. Patrick’s). Walsall went in front after Freddie Sheridan-Mills (County
Bridge) set up Wooldridge. Walsall then dominated play until a brilliant strike
gave the visitors a share of the spoils.
Shrewsbury U-11B 2 Walsall U-11B 3
- 14.12.02
The under-11B side ended a four-match losing sequence with a
welcome win at Shrewsbury. Things looked bad when Walsall fell behind against
the run of play but good work by Luke Cox (Short Heath) and Sam Hughes (St.
Anne’s) set up an equaliser for Joe Mangan (Manor). Walsall fell behind again
early in the second half but Hughes went on a run and saw his shot blocked by
the keeper but he put the rebound away for another equaliser. Walsall then
missed chances to take the lead until a lob from Todd Jewkes (New Invention) was
dropped by the keeper and Alistaire Cooke (Kings Hill) was on hand to score the
winner.
Bristol U-11B 3 Walsall U-11B 1 - 7.12.02
In
the B team Webster Shield game Walsall continued their losing run despite
playing well. Poor marking and missed chances let Walsall down as Bristol put
away their chances. Walsall trailed 2-0 at half time having been on top for most
of the half. Mark Wooldridge (Abbey) gave Walsall hope when he pulled a goal
back but another Bristol goal made the game safe for them. James Willey (St.
Thomas of Canterbury) and Alex Bendall (Short Heath) performed well for Walsall,
as did Danny Bedworth (Alumwell) as a stand-in keeper.
Walsall U-11B 1 Shrewsbury U-11B 6
- 2.11.02
The under-11B side produced its worst performance of the
season in this Webster Shield game. Shrewsbury took the lead but Walsall
equalised when Mark Wooldridge (Abbey) got on the end of a Tommy Frankham (St.
Patrick’s) cross to round off a good move. That was the only bright spot for
Walsall as Shrewsbury regained the lead before the break. In the second half
there was only one team in it as Walsall were overrun with the visitors helping
themselves to four more goals.
Walsall U-11B 2 Leeds U-11B 3 -
26.10.02
A depleted under-11B side grabbed an early lead against Leeds
when Luke Cox (Short Heath) put Tommy Frankham (St. Patrick’s) through. Leeds
hit back with a quick equaliser following a defensive mix up. A solo run by Mark
Wooldridge (Abbey) allowed Frankham to set up goalkeeper turned outfield player
Daniel Bedworth (Alumwell) the chance to give Walsall a half time lead. Leeds equalised
again early in the second half and scored a soft winner with minutes left.
Walsall U-11B 1 Gloucester U-11B 3
- 5.10.02
After their two good victories over Derby the under-11B team
also slipped to a disappointing defeat in their Webster Shield game against
Gloucester. Walsall conceded two soft goals in the space of a minute midway
through the first half to leave them chasing the game. Walsall hit back before
the break when a good ball from Matthew Wood (Leamore) set up John Painter
(Leamore) to slot the ball past the keeper. Gloucester missed a second half
penalty before Painter had a good run and shot for Walsall. The visitors only
made the game safe with a third goal in the final minute.
Derby U-11B 0 Walsall U-11B 6
- 28.09.02
The under-11B side improved on last week’s 4-0 victory over
Derby by putting six past the same opposition. Goals from Mark Wooldridge
(Abbey), Matthew Wood (Leamore) and a second from Wooldridge put Walsall in
control at the break. Good play by Wood set up Tom Frankham (St. Patrick’s)
for a long-range effort that found the net. Josh Pickard (Blackwood) added a
fifth before Ashley Bellingham (Busill Jones) completed the scoring with a
brilliant 30-yard shot.
Derby U-11B 0 Walsall U-11B 4 - 21.09.02
Walsall
came up trumps in the B team encounter as well. They took control of the game
once Mark Wooldridge (Abbey) gave them the lead after ten minutes following good
play down the left by Freddie Sheriden-Mills (County Bridge). Matthew Wood
(Leamore) added a second with a shot from the edge of the box. Ashley Bellingham
(Busill Jones) set up Wooldridge for his second goal and John Painter (Pelsall
Village) scored Walsall’s fourth before half time. Derby hit back in the
second half but Walsall keeper Daniel Bedworth (Alumwell) pulled off two superb
saves to keep them out. Centre backs Bellingham and Alistaire Cook (Kings Hill)
were also equal to anything Derby could produce up front.
