Press Reports Season 2000-01
Bristol U-11B 3 Walsall U-11B 4
- 10.02.01
The B team was involved in a Webster Shield game
and took the lead when Simon Pope (Short Heath) found the far corner. Bristol
soon equalised and the sides finished level at half-time. Walsall made a
confident start to the second half and Glenn Rogers (Ryders Hayes) scored his
first goal for Walsall when he lofted the ball over the keeper from the edge of
the box. Bristol hit back again to equalise but Walsall made a quick reply
through Daniel Brookes (Blakenall Heath). Daniel Jarvis (Rushall) struck from
the edge of the box to make it 4-2. During the last ten minutes Bristol pressed
forward and reduced the arrears. Walsall keeper Ben Nelson (Walsall Wood) was a
last minute hero when he pushed the ball onto the bar to keep Bristol out.
Walsall U-11B 6 Shrewsbury U-11B 0 – a
special ‘brief’ report from Tim Grimsley - 3.02.01
In a replay of last week’s fixture Walsall were
quick to continue where they had left off and put the Shrews under early
pressure which led to Ryan Edwards (Lindens) coming close on 2 minutes when he
was clear through on the keeper. He skipped past but ran out of room to convert.
It was less than 2 minutes later when Simon Pope (Short Heath) hit a beauty from
the edge of the box to find the corner of the net. The Shrews keeper was kept
busy throughout the game with good efforts from Cook, Jarvis and Edwards. After
several attempts from down the left flank Daniel Jarvis (Rushall) finally
converted after 25 minutes. The Shrews were rarely able to make an attack and
Ben Nelson (Walsall Wood) only had a couple of basic saves in the first half.
Walsall continued to pile on the pressure at the start of the second half and it
only took 2 minutes to make the score 3 -0 when Pope squared the ball from the
by-line for Jarvis to knock home from 4 yards. Pope then scored what was almost
a replay of his first half strike to make it 4-0. Adam Cook (Chuckery) nearly
added to the score line with a 25-yard effort which the keeper did well to save
but was unable to hold on to and Daniel Brooks (Blakenall Heath) followed up to
score. Walsall's last goal was a looping shot from Edwards who was rewarded for
his hard work during the game. The ball cleared the keeper and hit the far
corner of the net. The 6-0 result was the best performance by the team to date.
The quality of the football from the Walsall youngsters was absolutely
outstanding with good vision and inter linking passing they gave the Shrews very
little opportunity to gain possession or build an attack. I would go on to say
the football was of a quality that people would quite happily pay to watch!
Walsall U-11B 3 Shrewsbury U-11B 1 -
27.01.01
The under-11 B side recorded its first Webster Shield
victory with this win against Shrewsbury. Simon Pope (Short Heath) put Walsall
in front after five minutes when he ran half the length of the pitch before
slotting the ball past the keeper. Shrewsbury equalised from the penalty spot
just before half time. Walsall continued to pile on the pressure after the break
and a long-range effort from Danny Spinks (Mossley) clipped the bar and Daniel
Jarvis (Rushall) shot just wide. It was into the final five minutes before
Walsall’s dominance finally paid off when a long kick from keeper Ben Nelson
(Walsall Wood) was flicked on by Adam Cook (Chuckery) and Jarvis ran on to
score. Nelson then produced a brilliant save to deny Shrewsbury and another long
kick led to Walsall’s third goal when Spinks beat a defender and his shot was
helped into the net by Cook.
Walsall U-11B 1 Wolverhampton U-11B 2 -
16.12.00
The B team unluckily lost to Wolverhampton in their
Webster Shield encounter and put paid to any hopes of winning the Shield. Wolves
strengthened their place at the top of the table thanks to two spectacular goals
from Nathan Clarke (Stow Heath). Simon Pope (Short Heath) put Walsall in front
with his third goal in only his second game for Walsall. Daniel Jarvis (Rushall)
was unlucky not to increase the lead when a fierce shot went just the wrong side
of the post. Clarke then intercepted a goal kick and volleyed the ball straight
back into the net for the Wolves equaliser. He then scored with a spectacular
overhead kick from a corner to complete the scoring before half time. Jarvis was
unlucky not to score a Walsall equaliser when his chip hit the crossbar. Wolves
keeper Stuart Mincher (Stow Heath) then kept out efforts from Danny Spinks
(Mossley) and Adam Cook (Chuckery) in the last minute.
Walsall U-11B 4 West Bromwich U-11B 2
- 2.12.00
In the B team game Adam Lindsay (St. John’s) set
Walsall on the way to a double after good work by Ryan Edwards (Lindens) and
Daniel Blackwood (Alumwell). Simon Pope (Short Heath), making his debut,
increased the lead after the break with a good run and finish. Danny Wilkes (Old
Park) pulled a goal back for West Bromwich but minutes later Walsall’s Danny
Spinks (Mossley) ran at the defence and chipped the keeper to restore the two
goal advantage. Pope scored a near repeat of his first goal to make the game
safe for Walsall before Nathan Brain (Yew Tree) pulled another goal back for the
visitors.
Walsall U-11B 1 Leeds U-11B 3
- 28.10.00
In the B team game Walsall took the lead when a
ball kicked up field from deep in the Walsall half saw Daniel Blackwood
(Alumwell) run on and slot the ball past the Leeds keeper. Despite chances at
both ends Walsall went into the break with the lead and looked the better side.
Five minutes into the second half Leeds got in behind the defence and a cross
crept in at the near post. This gave Leeds a lift and they were on target again
2 minutes later when poor marking by the Walsall defence allowed Leeds a free
shot on goal which Walsall keeper Ben Nelson (Walsall Wood) was unable to hold
onto in the wet conditions. Poor marking led to Leeds adding a third goal which
left Nelson with no chance. Walsall newcomer Callum Birch (Ryders Hayes) then
had a shot blocked on the line. Nelson, playing his best game yet, got his
fingers to a Leeds free kick that was heading for the top corner.
Walsall U-11B 4 Sutton Coldfield U-11B 3
- 21.10.00
Sutton Coldfield took the lead against the run of
play midway through the first half of the B game when Alex Holloway (Mere Green)
beat Walsall keeper Ben Nelson (Walsall Wood) to a through ball. Earlier
Walsall’s Daniel Brookes (Blakenall Heath) hit the post and saw a shot drift
wide. Adam Lindsay (St. John’s) then hit the angle before Daniel Jarvis
(Rushall) grabbed a deserved equaliser right on half time. Walsall took the lead
in the second half when Brookes capitalised on a fumble by the keeper. The
Sutton keeper made amends a minute later when he denied Adam Fussell (Little
Bloxwich) with a save out of the top drawer. Sutton equalised when Mark Thomas
(New Oscott) scored from a free kick. Daniel Morris (Watling Street) restored
Walsall’s lead with a fine individual effort but bad defending let in Sam
Parsons (Four Oaks) for another Sutton equaliser a minute later. Morris scored a
deserved Walsall winner and there was still time for Brookes to hit the post for
the second time.
Gloucester U-11B 2 Walsall U-11B 0
-14.10.00
After a disappointing second half last week the B team knew they had to play
well to get back at Gloucester after the 5-2 defeat. Almost from the whistle
Walsall seemed to be against a sustained attack from an on form Gloucester.
Walsall were having difficulty defending particularly down the middle and good
saves by Ben Nelson (Walsall Wood) and good fortune kept the home team at bay
until about the 15th minute when the speedy Alex Morgan slotted the ball past
Nelson. Walsall continued to battle and came close to an equaliser when a
powerful strike from Daniel Brookes (Blakenall Heath) hit the underside of the
cross bar and the rebound was headed onto the post by Adam Lindsay. Walsall were
probably lucky in some ways to only be 1-0 down at half time but had battled
hard to keep it that way. After the break it was Walsall that went on the attack
and kept Gloucester penned back in their own half for most of the second half,
however good fortune and good defending were on Gloucester's side during the
second half and their keeper had to make several good saves to keep the score at
1-0 until 7 minutes from the end when Gloucester added to their lead when
Walsall were caught on the break and the talented Darius Morgan lifted the ball
over the oncoming Nelson. Walsall kept battling to the end in a spirited
performance which looked like they might score at any time and stand a chance of
getting back into the game. Walsall deserved a draw from a team that would give
many first teams a good run for their money and Walsall were able to hold their
heads up high after a quality second half performance.
Walsall U-11B 2 Gloucester U-11B 5
- 7.10.00
The B team game was the first fixture in the Jan
Webster Shield competition for B teams and Walsall found themselves up against
two forwards who would make most A team sides. Gloucester took the lead after
two minutes when Darius Morgan latched onto a through ball. Walsall hit back
when a Daniel Jarvis (Rushall) shot was parried and Daniel Morris (Watling
Street) found the net. Walsall keeper Ben Nelson (Walsall Wood) kept Walsall on
terms with two good blocks but could do nothing about Gloucester’s second goal
right on half-time from Alex Morgan. Walsall equalised in the first minute of
the second half when a Morris cross found Adam Cook (Chuckery). Nelson then
tipped a Gloucester free kick over the bar and Adam Fussell (Little Bloxwich)
cleared off the line as Gloucester piled on the pressure. Two goals from Darius
Morgan midway through the second half put Gloucester in control and namesake
Alex Morgan grabbed the fifth.
Kirkby U-11B 0 Walsall U-11B 6
- 30.09.00
The home side were just no match for a rampant
Walsall side who found the net on six occasions without reply. Ryan Edwards
(Lindens) opened the scoring for Walsall after five minutes and ten minutes
later Daniel Morris (Watling Street) struck the second following great approach
play by Daniel Blackwood (Alumwell). Steven Dougliss (Beacon) increased the lead
when a corner was cleared to him on the edge of the area and his fierce shot
went in from the underside of the bar. Morris then added his second from just
inside the box with a George Best style strike. Even though Walsall were down to
ten players after Dougliss joined a depleted A team Walsall still controlled the
game with Adam Lindsay (St. John's) showing some delightful touches from deep
positions. Man of the match Morris completed a well deserved hat-trick when the
keeper got his hands to a shot but was unable to keep it out. Adam Cook
(Chuckery) completed the rout when he netted inside the far post following a
corner.
Derby
U-11B 3 Walsall U-11B 6 - 23.09.00
Danny Spinks (Mossley) and Adam Cook (Chuckery) both
scored hat tricks for Walsall B in a nine goal under-11 thriller at Derby.
Spinks opened the scoring with a cross that nipped in at the far post. Daniel
Jarvis (Rushall) then crossed for Spinks to nod past the keeper. Walsall keeper
Philip Lutwyche (Meadow View) pulled off two good saves before he was finally
beaten just before half-time. Spinks then turned provider when Cook headed home
his long throw. Walsall continued to dominate with Daniel Blackwood (Alumwell)
causing panic in the Derby defence. Walsall went 4-1 up when Matthew Cook
(Whetstone Field) ended a long run with a cross that his namesake fired home
from the edge of the box for his second. Derby fought back with two quick goals,
one from the spot, but Spinks completed his hat trick in between. Cook did
likewise right on full time.
St. Helen’s U-11B 3 Walsall U-11B 4 -
9.09.00
In the B team game Walsall got off to a strong start
and were rewarded on five minutes with a fine goal from man of the match Daniel
Brookes (Blakenall Heath). Steven Dougliss (Beacon), playing a half in each
game, increased the lead six minutes later. A rare home attack saw St Helens
pull a goal back when Ben Baslin scored at the near post. Walsall continued to
dominate the first half and were rewarded when Daniel Blackwood (Alumwell) broke
free and curled the ball round the keeper. Walsall allowed St Helens back in the
game in the second half with a Daniel Price goal and an unfortunate own goal. It
was three minutes from time before Walsall got the win they deserved when an
injured Luke Aston (Little Bloxwich) met a cross to fire an unstoppable shot
high into the net.
Walsall U-11B 0
Liverpool U-11B 1 - 2.09.00
At Bentley the B team game
was equally close and competitive although Liverpool always had the edge up
front. Walsall keeper Philip Lutwyche (Meadow View) was given a taste of what
was to come when he blocked a shot on five minutes. He made another good save
minutes later before watching a shot go just wide. Daniel Morris (Watling
Street) created Walsall’s best chance late in the first half when his cross
was fumbled by the keeper and Adam Cook (Chuckery) was just foiled by a
defender. An unlucky mix-up in the Walsall defence let in Kevin Kirkwood to
score the only goal right on half-time. The second half saw few chances for
either side although Lutwyche confirmed his man of the match award with further
good saves. Edward Forsythe (Manor) prevented a second Liverpool goal with a
clearance off the line in the last minute.
