Press Report - 5.4.03

Two secondary cup finals have been played. In the under-12 final St. Thomas More beat Barr Beacon 4-3 in a thriller. Barr Beacon took the lead but Thomas More came back to lead 2-1 before Beacon equalised before the break. Barr Beacon then grabbed the lead again but Alex Francis completed a hat trick and John Handley weighed in with a goal to give Thomas More victory. In the under-13 final St. Thomas More completed a double by beating Arthur Terry 1-0 thanks to a Ricky Nicholls strike.

Shelfield Sports and Community College are through to the last 16 of the under-14s girls football cup after hammering Arrowvale School from Redditch 18-0. Megan Cook, Jenny Kendrick and April Phillips all scored hat-tricks in the rout. "This was an outstanding team performance where everyone contributed to the final result", said manager Julie Allen.

Shelfield's under-13 girls will be representing Walsall in the area finals of the PFA/adidas Predator 6-a-side competition after beating Shire Oak 4-0 in the final of the regional competition. They were helped by a superb effort from April Phillips.

St. Thomas More R.C. School 4 Ayleston School (Hereford) 4 (a.e.t. Ayleston won 4-3 on penalties)
In an amazing under-13 Coca Cola Cup Midlands semi-final Walsall’s St. Thomas More school lost out in a penalty shootout. Ayleston caught the home side cold with an early goal but Nathan Walker levelled things before the break. The last fifteen minutes saw the visitors take a 3-1 lead. St. Thomas More refused to give up and piled on the pressure. A scramble in the box saw Thomas More awarded a penalty and Ricky Nicholls made no mistake. A minute later Richard Nicholson chipped the keeper for a brilliant equaliser to force extra-time. Ayleston took the lead in the first minute and held out until Kieran Moran scrambled the ball home with last kick of extra-time. St. Thomas More missed their first two penalty kicks whilst Ayleston scored twice but they came back to level at 3-3. A third missed penalty cost St. Thomas More the game.

Darlaston School Year 7 girls 5-a-side team finish runners up in Midlands Final
The under-12 girls 5-a-side team from Darlaston School are the toast of Walsall after finishing runners up in the Midlands final of the ESFA Wagon Wheels competition. With an appearance in the National Final within their grasp they came up against a strong side from Church Stretton School and lost 3-0. This still ranks as the best performance in this competition by a girls team from a Walsall school.

St. Thomas More School reach the area 5 semi-final of the Under-13 ESFA/Coca Cola Cup
St. Thomas More School staged an amazing comeback to beat Thomas Telford School in the quarter final of the English Schools' F.A. Area 5 stage of the under-13 Coca Cola Cup competition. At 2-0 down and half-time looming things looked bleak before Ricky Nicholls pulled one back in the last minute of the half. Midway through the second half Simon Pope hit a fine goal to level the scores and with ten minutes to go, the turnaround was complete. Nathan Walker converted a deep cross from Ashley Lawrence to seal victory and clinch a home semi-final on Saturday January 25th against Ayleston School from Hereford. Keeper Zak Latham produced an outstanding performance to keep St. Thomas More in the game when the visitors were on top.
The previous round saw another thriller against Ashlawn School from Rugby. Coach Jonathan Prior said " The boys have been training hard this season and it showed in the match. We were helped along the way by the magnificent efforts of the in-form striker Kieron Moran and by half-time we were on our way to a comfortable 4-0 lead. However Ashlawn struck just before the half-time whistle to make it 4-1. After the half-time team talk the boys went back out for the second half that was equally as mouth watering a prospect as the first. Ashlawn's hopes were raised when they scored their second through an own goal. Sensing victory the St. Thomas More boys secured their place in the last eight through a second Ashley Lawrence goal".

Wagon Wheels U-12 5-a-side Boys Final

Ten schools took part in the Walsall SFA Boys Final of the Wagon Wheels 5-a-side competition held at Brownhills School on Friday 29th November 2002.

Schools were placed in two groups of five and the group winners St. Francis of Assisi and Arthur Terry played in the final. Barr Beacon could have finished top of group B instead of Arthur Terry but a 0-0 draw with Sneyd denied them the win they needed in the last game. A goal from Jake Plant was enough to win the final for Arthur Terry.

Arthur Terry School will now represent Walsall SFA in the Midlands final in the New Year.
